On Sunday the Saudi East-West Oil Pipeline resumed operations after a shutdown. At the same time, tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remained halted and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait stayed open to navigation. Iranian-controlled Kharg Island stayed under Tehran's authority, while the Houthis did not move into Aden.

The Pipeline's restart restored a land route for crude between the Persian Gulf fields and Red Sea export terminals. No change was reported in Israeli airspace, which continued to be accessible to civil flights.

Despite the Pipeline's return, the Hormuz chokepoint stayed closed, forcing carriers to rely on longer routes around the Arabian Peninsula. The Bab el-Mandeb, in contrast, experienced no effective closure and continued to handle cargo ships and Oil tankers. Shipping companies reported higher fuel consumption and longer transit times as a result.

Kharg Island, Iran's key Oil terminal, remained firmly under Iranian control throughout the month. The International Atomic Energy Agency did not conduct inspections at the Isfahan, Fordow, or Natanz nuclear sites by the end of October. This absence of visits left the status of Iran's enrichment facilities unchanged.

The Houthis stayed out of Yemen's port city of Aden, avoiding direct confrontation there.

Analysis

The reactivation of Saudi Arabia's East-West Pipeline provides a domestic alternative to seaborne export routes, reducing reliance on the vulnerable Strait of Hormuz. By moving crude overland to the Red Sea, the kingdom can maintain export volumes even while the maritime corridor remains obstructed, helping to stabilise its revenue stream.

The continued closure of Hormuz forces tankers to detour around the Arabian Peninsula, raising fuel costs and extending voyage times. Although the Bab el-Mandeb remains open, the longer route diminishes the efficiency gains from the Pipeline and keeps global shipping costs elevated, which may translate into higher Oil prices for end users.

Iran's retention of Kharg Island signals that its primary Oil export hub remains under national control, limiting opportunities for external forces to disrupt Iranian shipments directly. The lack of IAEA inspections at key nuclear sites leaves the international community without updated verification data, sustaining uncertainty about Iran's nuclear activities.

The Houthis' decision to stay out of Aden avoids a direct escalation in Yemen's main port, preserving a fragile status quo in the southern Red Sea. Meanwhile, the open Israeli airspace indicates that regional air traffic is proceeding without additional restrictions, but the overall security environment remains volatile due to the intersecting maritime and land-based pressures.
