**U.S. Core CPI eased to 2.4% while PPI rose 0.3% in August.**

On Thursday 10 September the European Central Bank increased its key Interest rate by 25 basis points, the first hike since earlier this year. In the United States, the Core consumer price index for August stood at 2.4% year-over-year, its lowest reading in several months.

U.S. producer prices also moved higher in August, with final-demand PPI rising at least 0.3% from the previous month. The increase was confirmed on Thursday 10 September. The rise suggests that wholesale price pressures persisted despite the moderation in consumer inflation.

China's annual inflation rate for August was recorded at between 0.5% and 0.6%, the slowest pace in years. The data were released on Wednesday 9 September.

The ECB's decision to raise rates by a quarter of a percentage point aligned with its earlier indication of a rise of 0.25% or more. Both announcements came as global inflation readings diverged.

Together, the August figures illustrate divergent price pressures across major economies as of September 2026. The United States showed moderate consumer inflation but rising wholesale costs. Europe moved to tighten monetary policy while China's inflation stayed near half a percent. Argentina continued to grapple with high monthly inflation.

## Analysis

By raising rates, the Bank aims to pre-empt any resurgence of price pressures, but the move also raises the cost of borrowing for households and businesses, potentially dampening growth.

Argentina's August inflation of roughly 2% per month remains far above the Central Bank's target, indicating persistent macro-economic instability. Sustained high inflation erodes real incomes and can force authorities to adopt aggressive policy measures, yet such steps risk further weakening an already fragile economy.

The simultaneous rise in producer-price inflation hints that cost pressures may be building at the wholesale level, a factor the Federal Reserve will likely monitor closely when setting future policy.

China's near-zero annual inflation reflects weak domestic demand and possibly the lingering effects of earlier stimulus withdrawals. With price growth so subdued, Chinese policymakers may face limited room to cut rates further, and could instead focus on structural reforms to boost demand without reigniting inflation.
